This was the view looking north from the B-Loop
on July 30th. We had been out doing the hike to Lonestar
Geyser, and when started the drive back to the RV
Park, we could see the smoke from miles away. When
we got to the intersection where we turn to go to
FBRV, the road on north to Canyon was closed. When
we got to the RV park we were told to be ready to
evacuate on a 45 minute notice. We got all the outside
stuff put in the bays then took some time to take
some pictures.
The fire had started on the west side of the Grand
Loop Highway, just about 1/2 mile or so from the LeHardy
Rapids. The wind, which was pretty fierce that day,
had fanned the fire up pretty fast, then blew the
embers across the highway and across the Yellowstone
River. From there it grew and grew, eventually topping
12,000 acres. As of August 17th the fire is still
burning. |
