| While
in Gunnison, Co, we got our first Hummingbird Feeder. What a joy it's
been, watching the tiny little things hover in air, fly backwards,
fight each other for what is more than enough Hummingbird feed, and
battle the bees and yellowjackets. It didn't take long, and I wondered
what it would take to get some really good pictures of these mini
marvels. It took a few false starts, but the Canon 20D seems to be
a miracle camera. The images are at various speeds, but the trick
seems to be setting the camera in Av mode, with the ISO at 800 or
1600 depending of available light. Set the f-stop at 5.6 or 8, with
a 75-300 Image Stableized lens. Then put the camera in motor drive,
5 frames per second, and focus on the edge of the feeder. It will
work best when the shutter speed is above 1/2000th of a second, but
you can get lucky with slower speeds, and sometimes wing blur adds
to the overall appeal of the image. One more hobby. :-) |
